Others have noted that pretty much every song is a hit, but here’s what really gets me. It’s like the band unconsciously decided that they were all a flaming train wreck of humanity, but let’s keep it together long enough to make some amazing music, at one another’s expense. Then, you read something about the band and you realize that the songwriters are screaming/cooing at each other! It’s painful, but real. (i.e., The Chain followed by You Make Loving Fun). The next is a giddy ode to a new love affair. You feel like you’re on a roller coaster.
This kind of unbridled honesty is so rare. But Nicks/Buckingham/McVie all bring their individual talents in a way that plays out so well. If this were just a Stevie Nicks album, it’s not as good. There are two reasons why this album is among the greatest ever, in my opinion. There’s an excess of production and hedonism here that is pretty gross. It’s representational of why punk rock became so vital.
